The Research Institute of Cardiology was established in 1980 due to the growing concerns about heart-related illnesses. Led by Professor Evgeny Chazov, it followed the example of the first Cardiology Research Institute in Moscow, as directed by a decree from the USSR Council of Ministers in 1977. Professor Vladimir Almazov, from the 1st Leningrad Medical University, led the creation of the institute. Supported by the city administration, the institute obtained a clinic building and funds for renovation. Its main aim was to develop better methods for diagnosing, treating, and preventing heart diseases, with the goal of reducing illness and improving public health. Additionally, the institute set up a remote diagnostic center to analyze electrocardiograms over the phone, providing consultations to many citizens. The Center blends fundamental and applied research across different areas with providing specialized medical care and continuous interdisciplinary training for professionals.
