Established in 1901 as Silliman Institute by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions, it holds the distinction of being the first American and Protestant-founded institution of higher learning in the country. The Silliman University Medical School (SUMS) is an academic department of Silliman University, offering medical education in Dumaguete City. Founded on March 20, 2004, the school initially conducted classes at a two-story building adjacent to the Angelo King Allied Medical Sciences Center within the SU Campus.
