West Visayas State University College of Medicine
Established in 1975, the College of Medicine at West Visayas State University holds the distinction of being the pioneering medical school in Western Visayas and the second state-owned medical institution in the country. With a total of 2,468 graduates as of March 2009, a significant number of whom are currently contributing their expertise across different areas of the Philippines.
Presently, graduates of the West Visayas State University College of Medicine are actively involved in community service as primary healthcare practitioners, educators, researchers, and specialized clinicians, both locally and internationally. Situated within the expansive 17-hectare main campus of the university, the College of Medicine is housed in the two-story Roxas Hall. Its facilities include a dissection room at Rizal Hall and access to the University Computer Center for computer-assisted instruction. The concept of establishing a medical school in Western Visayas was conceived in 1971, with the goal of offering quality medical education and training, particularly for disadvantaged but deserving youth in the region, and addressing the growing demand for healthcare professionals to serve the community. Following thorough evaluation and approval by the Board of Medical Education in 1974, the inaugural entrance examination and selection process were conducted, attracting 250 applicants. In June 1975, under the leadership of Dr. Angel de Leon as its dean, the WVSU medical school welcomed its first cohort of 25 first-year medical students, conducting classes at Rizal Hall.
